No audio on the playback while on the Screenflow program

On a macOS Sierra 10.12.6 no audio problems with any other programs. I cannot hear any audio playback, even though you can see the meters and the computer volume all the way up from this screenshot. When exported to youtube you can hear the audio. I just can't hear it through the Screenflow program while working on it.

Generally these issues are due to the system sound configuration.
Please make sure your headphone icon is enabled on the right.

Do not use Bluetooth or USB headsets or speakers.
Test by setting system sound to internal speakers, headphone or line out speakers depending on your Mac model.

  • First, I have attempted this recording (I do math videos for my students) 11 times with various poor results.  I have used Screenflow since version 4 and paid for multiple versions sometimes twice (stupid me).  It is a 10 minute video (or less).  I am attempting to record an external monitor AND my iPad screen (which is the main input for the purpose of the video).

In my attempts, I changed I/O on external mic and iPad.  I restarted the computer.  I uninstalled and installed the app.  Nothing seems to fix this.  Screenshots included.

Mac OS Sierra. Screenflow 6 from App Store so wife can use it as well.  I believe I have enough free memory/storage.

During my troubleshooting, at times I was able to get audio from the Yeti but the iPad did not record OR I was able to get the iPad to record but no audio (as depicted in my last attempt which was the second one after uninstall/install).

Note in the third and fourth images below, I am whistling to demonstrate that sound is being registered by the microphone.  I have not yet tried the internal/onboard mic.  That is next after this post since I don't own a better external mic to not be able to use it.

Also note the time stamp on the recording.  I did not take 6 hours to record that.  It was about 10 minutes.

    Utterly frustrating.  Help!

    Okay:  Upate while composing this!

In the last screenshot, note that there is a bundle of audio peaks near the end of the 6 hour recording.  That is what I recorded.  For some reason, Screenflow added a 6+ hour lead-in.  I can work with this, but it would be annoying if this continues.  I suspect that maybe that was what was going on all this time but I was not attentive to the length (I did not scroll right and investigate the time stamp/length).  So, nothing wrong with equipment as I can tell, but this tremendously long lead-in.

Dana W Cook do not use USB output generally and especially so when using USB sources as input (USB Mic and iPad Lightening to USB). Please keep audio monitoring to Internal Monitors or Mac headphone/speaker output jack.

If you are on High Sierra you must update to ScreenFlow 6.2.3. That may not be available in the Mac App Store as they don't allow updates after a new version (ScreenFlow 7) is released.

    Please read

    ScreenFlow 6:

    You have the following options:

    1. Upgrade to ScreenFlow 7 for only $39 dollars
    2.  Download 6.2.3 which has been tested and confirmed to work with High Sierra.

Mac App Store customers, contact our Sales team with a screen shot of your purchase

    1. Indicate if you are interested in upgrading to v7 for $39.
    2. Request a ScreenFlow 6 serial number and download at no cost.

First make the monitoring changes though and reboot the Mac and test in a new project making new recordings.

  • You're telling me, that in 2018, your product doesn't work with a Bluetooth or USB headset?  How can that even be real?

Mike Bausano You're responding to an 8 month old thread about the previous version of ScreenFlow. The current version is ScreenFlow 8. Please test directly. Both USB and Bluetooth work.

  • CraigS Well.  That is great to hear... but I still got nothing.  That's why I'm an 8 month old thread, because I'm trying to understand why my bluetooth headset isn't playing the audio.  Input is fine, no output.  I'm getting output from other sources on the same headset.

Mike Bausano You haven't mentioned the version of ScreenFlow you're using or the Mac. Both make a difference. I use Bluetooth headphones to monitor in 8 and did as well in 7.3.1. You may have a problem if you using Bluetooth Mic on the headset while trying to monitor at the same time through the headset.

This thread was about version 6 and is accurate for that version.

  • I hope someone can help! I've just downloaded version 8 or whatever the newest is. And I've allowed permissions on my mac to access the mic, but I STILL can't get ScreenFlow to record me? I've even turned the permissions inside security on and off multiple times to try and see if it would reset...still nothing. HELP! Or I'm going to have to ask for a refund I guess...

Have you allowed ScreenFlow specifically to access the mic?
Please provide screenshot from System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy with Mic selected in that window for confirmation.

Then provide screenshot in ScreenFlow Configure Recording showing the mic selected and the meters show green (indicating ScreenFlow is seeing sound).

  • I'm having an issue with my audio, with headphones directly plugged in & I even removed the headphones & I still have no sound. This is multiple different clips. I have ScreenFlow version 8.2.2 & my mac is mojava 10.14.3. Not sure why it's not working> I want to say 2 weeks ago it was playing, and now that I went back in to edit there's no sound, but it still shows that audio bar that it's playing. (If I need to create a trend let me know)

Something about your monitoring has changed. Reboot your computer and setup the monitoring to your headphone. Check by playing a video in Quicktime Player. Then open ScreenFlow and test there. Make sure the lower left timeline headphone icon is enabled.

Hello there, I'm on High Sierra, the latest update. I have set the output to TAC ( Telestream Audio Capture ) and I can record computer's audio. I see that when I have  finished. But, at the time of recording I can't hear any audio just to know what I'm actually recording. Thanks. ( ScreenFlow version : 7.3.2, 31091 )

Ioan Pap Sorry but this thread is about no audio on playback. If it's not the same issue please start a separate thread. Your description doesn't match the original post.

Toby Beresford Good to hear. Sometimes a simple restart fixes the issue by reestablishing communication.

Hi Using Catalina, SF8, iPhone 6s+. When recording from iPhone no audio—not even an audio track, though video works fun. Tried restarting all devices. No change. I also have allowed SF in Security preferences.

AJ Baltes First test Quicktime Movie Recording set to recording video and audio from your phone to make sure you're not running into a compatibility issue between your iPhone and the OS.

CraigS  Thanks, CraigS. Quicktime Movie Recording set to record video and audio works fine. So there doesn't seem to be a compatibility issue.

    AJ Baltes

Then try recording in ScreenFlow using the iOS YouTube app for example  (something that plays a video with audio). Please make sure you're having a recording issue vs a monitoring issue.

So far we have no other reports of this issue and I personally confirmed I have no problem recording video and audio from my iPhone in ScreenFlow. ScreenFlow itself using the same subsystem the operating system uses so if it works in Quicktime it will work in ScreenFlow (because ScreenFlow is using those resources to do the recording).

AJ Baltes It's not clear what version of 8 you're using but I can confirm that I have no issue recording and playing back from my Bluetooth headset which has a built in mic in ScreenFlow 9.0.1.

The last version of ScreenFlow 8 was 8.2.6
