audio recording delay

When I try to record a video together with computer internal audio, the video begins recording just after the countdown, but the audio doesn't start recording until 5, 10, or even 15 seconds after that.

Any ideas out there? Thanks for your time, everybody!

Please update to ScreenFlow 10.0.3 and try again. Make sure you are on Catalina or Big Sir.

Wally Flint what OS? What is your sound source?

  • Mac OS Big Sur 11.5. Sound source is computer internal audio. (I'm trying to record a video on the web.)

     YouTube video in Safari?
    Please describe your Mac setup?

Anything else running on the computer especially audio apps?
Can you provide a link so I can try recording it as well?
I want to make sure there's no issue with the source?

  • Yes, YouTube video in Safari. This one took 16.5 seconds before the audio kicked in:

Wally Flint Thanks for that. I'm seeing about a 2-second delay.
I found if I started recording while an Ad was running it would be much longer as you describe.
This is likely due to switching to the Telestream Audio Capture driver.
      Investigating FLOW-11263

Again please describe your Mac setup including your sound settings and any apps running including any that might be audio related.

After you do such recording in ScreenFlow can you then do a screen recording of ScreenFlow as you play the timeline to show the issue?
Since what Safari and YouTube are doing at the time you start recording, maybe a factor, I'd like to see that.

Test playing a video in Quicktime (all other programs closed) and see how ScreenFlow behaves when you initiate screen recording with computer audio.

  • The only things that were running when I did that recording with the 16 second delay were Safari and Screenflow. Let me try it again while noting other configuration parameters and I'll get back to you.

  • did some more experiments:

    apps running: safari, screenflow

    input: built in mic

    output: speakers

    delay: 3.5 sec

    input: scarlett 8i6 audio interface

    output: scarlett 8i6 audio interface

    delay: 20 sec

Also, I don't really understand the 5 second countdown. It seems that I have to let it countdown and then press the play button on the safari video as quick as I possibly can. Is that the way it is suppossed to work?

Wally Flint Sorry but I'm not sure what you're describing above.
      You're not mentioning computer audio.
You must describe in a way someone can duplicate your setup including the Mac model.

You can adjust the timing of the countdown. When you start playing something on the screen is up to you. ScreenFlow is an editing program so you can start anytime after the countdown and trim what you don't want.

      Please follow my instructions.

    computer audio output: speakers

    delay: 3.5 sec

computer audio input: scarlett 8i6 audio interface

computer audio output: scarlett 8i6 audio interface

    delay: 20 sec

Wally Flint Computer audio and external sources may have an offset. External sources have a different processing path depending on the source and connection type.

We just need to see Computer Audio vs Screen Recording.

Wally Flint Having not heard back with some needed information, we've run our own tests. There seems to be a delay specific to Safari/YouTube.

      Our test
      Start Apple Music
      Start Safari YouTube
Start ScreenFlow and record screen and computer audio.

Apple Music is recorded immediately and Safari Youtube audio is delayed.

May be specific to M1 Macs or Big Sur
