Rendezvous causes apollo twin audio to drop out

Hi. I'm using a Macbook Pro with 10.15.3 and audio through an Apollo Twin. Everything works fine until I start a remote rendezvous session and then my audio no longer works. I can hear the guest but they can't hear me. If I look in rendezvous audio mixer my built in mic works but not the Apollo Twin (same is true in preview and live windows). If I reboot wirecast, I can get my apollo twin audio to come back but once I try to start another rendezvous session (in particular when I add the guest), my audio stops working again.

  • I am seeing this same behavior with a different audio interface.  Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 (3rd Gen).  Audio interface works with wirecast perfectly until a rendezvous guest joins the session.  When the Rendezvous dashboard is opened, the audio interface shows input UP UNTIL THE POINT that a guest joins the session, and from that point on, the audio interface does not show any input.  Same behavior with the reboot of wirecast as well - causes wirecast to see audio from the interface again until a rendezvous guest is added.

Also using macOS 10.15.3 (19D76) and my hardware specs are below:

      Model Name: MacBook Pro

      Model Identifier: MacBookPro15,3

Processor Name: 8-Core Intel Core i9

      Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz

      Number of Processors: 1

      Total Number of Cores: 8

  •  Justin R  Tommy Jamin  since you're goth experiencing the issue with different interfaces and both on macOS 10.15.3 you can help us find the common element. Fill out the support form and explain in detail how you're setting up your Rendezvous audio.

If you have two computers you may want to try being a guest on a call you create to see if you can duplicate the issue locally.

  • CraigS Thanks Craig! I submitted this as a support form yesterday. And just included Tommy's post in my response to their questions. But maybe Tommy can also submit it too so they'll know it is possibly a larger issue. I can recreate the problem when I add myself as a rendezvous guest from my phone (the sound drops out immediately). Same if it is a remote guest trying it. I was doing it with my own phone yesterday to test different scenarios and it seems really consistent. When you add a guest via rendezvous, the audio from the preview and live sessions drops off the meter. Only way to bring it back is to restart wirecast.

  • I also just submitted the form.  Hopefully we can get this fixed.  I am currently on my trial of wirecast and will likely purchase the full version for my company to use if we can get this figured out.

  • This was reported previously with 13.0.x versions, but I don't see the issue in 13.1. What version of Wirecast are you using?

  • macOS 10.15.4 is out so do check to see if that has an impact if the device is dependent on Apple's USB audio codec.

If the audio interface is dependent on a custom driver please do include that information.

  • Justin R - I do a weekly stream about non wirecast topics. Its about drones actually. After my broadcast, I do a regular discord chat, where some friends who also use wirecast join for the chat. You're welcome to join that if you like.

This week should be interesting. My 100th weekly broadcast. It will be a big rendezvous fest, inviting past guests and other audience members to come into rendezvous to say hi. Weather permitting, I'll also be flying a drone, and sending live RTMP via a nginx RTMP proxy into wirecast during the show. Click the link to my channel, and feel free to say hi after the show.

  • CraigS I updated to 10.15.4 and still having the same problem. Using the latest version of UAD software 9.1.1.0 for the Apollo. Don't have any issues with audio otherwise. Only when I initiate a rendezvous session.

I am going to recommend something I hate doing myself. Reset preferences. This will set rendezvous input/output audio devices to be empty/default. Then, start and join a rendezvous session. Confirm if things still work as expected without making any changes in the rendezvous dashboard... and one by one, make required changes to get the dashboard setup the way you require - and make a note of which setting(s) cause anything to not work as expected.

  • Justin R Greg's troubleshooting technique is worth trying.

If resetting preferences actually mean you can't reproduce the issue that's something we need to look at as well.

  • Hmm. Same thing still seems to happen. Everything works until I add a rendezvous session.

One thing I don't entirely get is when I plug in the apollo with reset preferences, only the left channel works (channel 1 is set to L and channel 2 is set to R). It seems that channels 1, 3, and 4 are giving off audio with my apollo set up. So I have to choose RL in channel one to get stereo. With my built-in mac sound, L in channel 1 and R in channel 2 works with stereo. I don't know if any of this matters but when I look at the audio map channels 1, 3 and 4 are showing signals when I speak into the mic.

Either way, a rendezvous session disables my apollo set up until I reboot the application.

  • Justin R resetting preferences might mean you have to also create an audio shot and check/change properties in Wirecast.

Also, I'm wondering if the device thinks it's being sent to another destination and therefore disables when you start Rendezvous.

  • Thanks. I did create a new audio shot and changed the properties so it would come through in stereo. The strange thing is the Apollo continues to function fine in it's own console application and all of my other system audio plays and records through it even after Wirecast no longer recognizes it. It is just wirecast that loses the connection to my apollo. Since the same thing is happening to Tommy Jamin who is using a completely different audio unit (focusrite scarlet). I think it must be something in the wirecast software that is not handling the connections right.

I just did a stream earlier today with wirecast and everything sounds great coming through the apollo. But if I tried to start a rendezvous session I know I would lose all my audio. Haven't heard back from support after my initial inquiry. CraigS do you have contact with them? Do you know if they are trying to figure out the problem? I, like Tommy, would like to purchase this software but need to make sure this very essential part of the software works first with my setup.

We're testing with our own interface to confirm the issue. Post you case number here and I can follow up and post back.

I just had an idea Justin R  - In wirecast preferences, there is feedback detection. Try turning that off. If for some reason wirecast detects feedback and mutes some audio, this could be the cause of your issue.

  • CraigS Case #00730621 is for the same issue with the Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 interface.  Thanks for your help guys!

  • Greg Kuhnert Tried to disable that and had the same problem. It's helpful to know that Tommy Jamin is having this same issue with a different audio interface because then we know it's not particular to the Apollo. The apollo loses audio to wirecast right when I connect a new rendezvous session but the apollo is still working on the rest of my system and with other software. It is only wirecast that does not recognize the sound from it at that point so I'm assuming something happens in rendezvous that disables the audio from the class compliant core audio driver on my Apollo to the system audio or something like that.

  • Thank you Craig! I had a quick question too. Is the "missing audio driver" message for newer macs something that will be handled in an upcoming version? I don't currently have that issue because I don't have the latest mac (and I know there are work  arounds) but just wondering if that is something that will eventually be fixed in an update.

    Like
  • Justin R The problem is that we expect a macOS update to eventually block the audio driver. Apple has to develop an API for audio capture and, to date, they haven't.

  • Justin R BTW one temporary workaround if you've installed Wirecast 13.1 on a computer that didn't have a previous version of Wirecast is listed in this FAQ which explains the details about the situation.

  • Came across this whilst trying to debug the exact same problem.
Using Focusrite 8i6 with Mac OS 10.15.  All fine until I connect a guest to rendzvous at which point the Focusrite stops speaking to Wirecast.  Only way to restore is to exit/reload programme - and then NOT use Rendezvous.   Hoping you guys can find the fix, as apart from this I love it!
