Adding a separate video overlay to screen capture for a video tutorial

Hi all - apologies if this has been asked before….

im using an iPhone on a tripod to capture me whilst recording my desktop on my Mac as I prefer it to using a webcam.

I would like to overlay the iPhone recording (video only) in the top corner and have it running along side the desktop recording.

Can this be done in screenflow or would I need to use something like Final Cut instead?

Many thanks,

Dan.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "overlay" as that can have many different interpretations. ScreenFlow is multitrack video so you can do picture in picture but I'm not sure that's what you mean.

If you mean iPhone over desktop it does that by default when you record both at the same time for example.

CraigS hi Craig. Thanks for the reply - yep so I wanted to use my iPhone as the webcam ideally - can I connect my iPhone to the software and record live - and/or can I add iPhone footage as Picture in Picture after I’ve captured my desktop? How would I connect my iPhone so that screenflow recognises it as a recording device for video?

  • Hi Craig - just had another look at this. So just to be clear - it appears as if you can’t record your desktop screen and iPhone at the same time?

In ScreenFlow 10 you can record both those and any number of other sources all at the same time. Multiple monitors, iPhone, webcams (more than one), audio sources, all at the same time.

CraigS ah I see how u can add the extra device - as Mathew said - the iPhone footage is pretty much unusable tho as it shows menu items on the phone…. I’m guessing as he was saying that there’s no way to remove all of that….

Dan Myers There are third party apps that can record without overlays but using a third party webcam app might be better.

Those overlays are recorded in though if you record the iPhone screen directly.

  • Dan Myers  I can't check right now ... too much to do. But I believe I've successfully combined iPhone and screen with Screenflow. However there was something I didn't like about it: I think it was the iPhone controls showing up in the capture. At any rate, I now use Camo software. Works fantastically well with Screenflow. Easy to combine phone (with many options) with regular screen capture.

You can either use a third party app to send a clean image or a third party app to use the iPhone as a webcam. So far Reincubate Camo seems best for the latter as you note.
