Output shots via SDI

It would greatly improve our workflow if we could output different shots over SDI (as well as program out). It function very similarly to the multi-viewer output.

At present we have a set up with two incoming Skype callers – and currently use HDMI monitors to send picture of the callers to our presenter using the multi-viewer configuration (single shot, no overlay).

We'd love to remove as much HDMI from the set up as possible to avoid out os sequence handshaking and general confusion at times on reboot (HDMI outputs sometimes get confused presumably because of handshaking with splitters, DAs etc.

Wirecast helpfully sees all 8 SDI outputs on our BMD Quad link 2 – but currently you can only output program.

It would be great if you could choose a shot for each output.

  • You can use some software to output NDI signals into SDI with supported hardware.

We're investigating the feature request. Internal reference WIRE-18571

And of course, some would like individual shot NDI output as well in Wirecast (would a be separate feature request).

The developers have two questions regarding use case needs.

    1) is this for monitoring or production/post-production use?
The reason is that if system resources are stretched the program may need to allocate priority resulting in degradation. For monitoring that may be tolerable but for production/post use that would be unacceptable thereby requiring degradation elsewhere such program output.

    2) What would the source of audio be?
Would this be from the shot or program, etc?

    • CraigS Thanks for the reply and apologies for the delay in getting back on here.

      In answer:

      1) Our use is primarily monitoring (although we do use one SDI out currently to record program). We currently use the multi-viewer output to provide our presenter with different monitors (currently these would be Program, Guest 1, Guest 2). My thought would be to replace these monitors with straight SDI feeds to those monitors of the different shots. This would mean less reliance on HDMI feeds to monitors.

      2) We currently use one SDI out for Program with Program audio. We wouldn't have a need for separate audio on different SDI outs – but wow it would be nice. This leads into a previous discussion (https://telestreamforum.forumbee.com/t/y704k6/multi-audio-output) about multiple audio outputs (which is a much higher priority than this SDI request IMO).

In an ideal world I would love to see some type of matrix mixer within Wirecast for both audio and video. Effectively you already have video 'buses' with your shots. These can already be configured to be solo (video) outs using the multi-viewer configuration – but only using monitors plugged into a video card.

You could have audio tracks and video shots on the left as 'sources'. Then audio and video output devices on the right. Main program mix would be its own 'Track'.

I've gone down a rabbit hole here and there may well be many 'gotchas' that I haven't thought of... but even the audio part of the diagram below would be super useful.

Shaun Humphreys There is a separate feature request for bussing and multi-audio out as you've noted. The developers were asking about your workflow because the system would handle monitoring likely at a lower priority than master audio recording.

    • CraigS Yes I get it and as I mentioned, audio routing would be a priority over this request.

      Thanks

    • Shaun Humphreys amazing setup!!

With this routing capabilities, Wirecast will be our definitive solution! CraigS report this scheme to Wirecast engineers!

We have a similar monitoring need. Having 2 multi-views, each with its own configuration, will solve our problem. Will be helpful to have a 6 views layout, sometimes 4 is too small and 10 is way more than we need. So we are requesting those two features.

Been able to send the multi-views to SDI will be great, but we can live with HDMI output until that feature is available.
