Lag on timeline zoom

Hi -

It seems as though screen flow hangs temporarily almost every time I zoom-in full on the timeline.

This is very distracting, as the waiting blows my momentum in editing.

I get the spinning rainbow wheel, and I just have to wait for it to go away.

Occasionally, the application crashes (or just hangs indefinitely until I force quit and start over).  I've become used to saving projects constantly, which I don't mind.  But this hanging is very frustrating when my available time to work on videos is already very limited.

Would reducing, (or increasing) the thumbnail cache improve my situation?
Any other settings I can change to prevent this going forward?

    Year of the model?
An older i5 might be sluggish.

The length of the timeline and the amount of the zoom might be a factor.
Also, the percentage of free drive space might be a factor.
You can turn off thumbnails and especially waveform and see if the behavior improves.

  • it's a 2017 running Catalina 10.15.6.
