I've opened up a feature request for Wirecast to do automatic volume adjustment natively inside of Wirecast., just like the Powair or Volume Rider plugins do. Please vote if you are interested: https://telestreamforum.forumbee.com/t/h7h8a9v
FYI, I've been using the Powair plugin very successfully to do this for nearly a year now, and its improved my audio levels tremendously. I'm using it in a non-Wirecast stream though, since Wirecast doesn't support 3rd party plugins.

they could affect the streaming performanceThey can and, depending on the plugins, the impact can be significant.

Many people use a VST/AU of their choice on the master channel, SonicState who do a weekly Podcast use V-Mix and put Izotope Ozone on the Master. I use a Schwepps Omni Channel on my Voice in Logic and then a Limiter on the Master out from it with no siginifcant added latency.
No, Wirecast is great for Video options, but for audio it's not up to par. I did an 8 Hour show on Oct 10th in place of the physical event (something we are all increasingly doing) and I had a number of issues throughout.
Link to my Stream - https://youtu.be/bzysljTb8NQ1. Rendezvous.
I had 9 Live Guests at different times and set/tested with them the evening before. They were coming in at different times throughout but as it was a new link to rendezvous the following day as it oftens stops working, the settings I had for them kept changing, so I had to host the show, while changing their settings in real-time. Selecting their audio but once selected to make live, their shot came up.
All the settings for the Compressor I put on their voice were gone and of course with no way to even save a preset for any of the fx settings, I had to guess it. Worst still, until they are Active and Live, you don't even see their audio channel to add anything.
If there were the ability to add my own Plug-Ins I could use my Presets. Also, to be able at least to put a Compressor/Limiter over the main audio out, then that would help.
2. Audio Mixer control.
I don't have the 4 Controllers that are in the Preferences, but have a lot of midi controllers by other manufacturers. Throughout the stream some of the Guests Mic Management wasn't the best and I had no idea who it was coming from and had no way to practically mute someone.
Why can't I have the ability to use and map my own Controller so I can mute someone. It would help if a Mixer was available before Live, but really, we should be able to use a midi controller of our choice.
3. Audio Monitoring.
I use a Presonus Quantum as an audio interface and have to go through Logic and the feed through from Loopback to get audio into Wirecast. It's too cumbersome, if I select the Presonus directly in Wirecast I can't set/change the buffers for the Quantum. If I press the Monitoring button in wirecast, it comes out almost a second later, so I can't continue to listen as it puts me off while talking, hearing myself back a second later.
So, I have to turn off the monitoring, but the problem with that is, if I load in a Video file, set it live, I can't hear the audio and have to guess when it's going to finish.
4. Lag.
I have the latest 10 core iMac with 96gb Ram but running Wirecast for that amount of time (8 hours) it got more and more unresponsive over the course of the show. I'd select a shot and it would take a few moments to be highlighted, the gap between selecting and it being highlighted got longer and longer throughout the 8 hours, until at about the 7th hour, I had to shut wirecast down and restart it while the Live Show was running...hardly professional and when it came back up, it worked as it should, no computer reboot required.
5. Audio Capture.
Why hasn't the System Audio been updated to capture with the T2 chip, Loopback can do it. This should be updated so I don't have to use 3rd Party software and is then added into wirecast under a seperate audio channel in the mixer.
I fail to see why the abilty to add your own Plug-Ins hasn't been implemented other than deciding not wanting to do it. At least gives us the ability to save Presets of the settings in the existing fx...this has all been asked for years ago.
Is there are roadmap of development that could be outlines? Live Streaming is going to be a bigger part of my (and others) Business model and i'd rather take the pain now and get a PC with V-Mix than wait years for Wirecast to catch up? -

Loopback can do it.They're not directly capturing system sound. It's a bit different. You can use Loopback in Wirecast. You can also use Blackhole which is free. You may want to read this from our knowledge base written in four parts about this. We're certainly investigating how we might solve this but I can't say at this point whether a virtual audio cable would be the overall solution vs capture system sound.
