Horrible Latency With the Telestream Audio Capture Driver

Hi Craig,

I just purchased the SF 8 upgrade. You may recall, I immediately reverted to v. 7.2 after initially trying the new audio driver when v.7.3 came out.

I bought SF 8 because I really want to get on board with this new driver. I know I can't keep my head buried in the sand indefinitely. So, I just installed it and gave it a try. I set my DAW output (Logic Pro X) to Telestream Audio Capture and gave it a try. The latency with this driver though makes it completely unusable for any real-time input. It is over 90 ms at a 128 buffer setting.

Is Telestream working on improving the performance of this driver? It really is unusable, and I'm sure not just for me. I really want to jump into 2018 and not get left behind, hopefully before 2020 rolls around!

What can you suggest? Is there a fix coming? This driver has been around now for about a year and a half. Surely I'm not the only one in this boat???

I'm using an Apollo 8p audio interface. I know I can route my DAW to a virtual output, have ScreenFlow capture that at the same time as my VO mic, and then separate the audio channels after the fact within SF. But this is so much more cumbersome, with absolutely no benefit other than being able to use a newer version of SF.

It would be awesome if Screenflow could separate the audio inputs from multi-input audio interfaces right on capture. that would solve everything, and avoid having to use the Telestream Audio Capture driver.

We're aware of the latency issue. Apple has to come out with an SDK for us to work on certain issues and, to date, they haven't yet. Changes in the hardware (T2 chip) and the OS (deprecating .kext drivers) put us in this position and the issue is not specific to our drivers. It's affecting audio capture for many developers. It's in Apple's hands at this point. We've certainly been in contact with them.

Please read this KBase article from us.

  • Thanks, Craig. I wish there was better news, but I guess I'll have to wait. I'll hang on to 7.2 as long as I can and then bite the bullet, record via the virtual inputs on my Apollo 8p; and then separate the streams after the capture within SF.

I think that's a reasonable plan as long as the .kext extension use isn't blocked by the OS.

  • Eli Krantzberg Hey Eli,

Like I said in a few other threads, I use 7.2 for capture and 8.xxx for editing. Hope that helps. (Don't run them at the same time)

  • Kenny Gioia Thanks, Kenny. I'm just worried about how we'll work once the day comes when 7.2 won't run any longer :-(

Eli Krantzberg That's certainly a valid concern because it's entirely possible Apple will block the old .kext based drivers.

  • Eli Krantzberg I don't know if Logic has this option (I know Pro Tools doesn't) but in REAPER I can choose "Save Live Output to Disk" which will record the DAW audio while making a tutorial. You can also get a separate audio app that just records the audio (WireTap - never tried it) so that Screenflow only captures video while something else does the audio. Good luck.

  • Kenny Gioia No, Logic doesn't have a feature like that. It wouldn't work great for me anyway, as I usually stop and start several times in the course of a single video. I can work around things using UA's Console app when it becomes necessary. The Console app allows you to route the output of Logic (or most likely any DAW) to a pair of virtual inputs in Console. Screenflow can capture that, as it is seen as a regular pair of inputs, just like it was a hardware input. The problem is that it will then be merged with the VO mic input. You need to go into Screenflow after and either detach the audio or duplicate it and solo the necessary channels on the duplicates in order to separate the DAW output stream from the VO mic input.  It's a kludgy workaround; but it will probably become my new workflow when the time comes :-(

I know, it's an old thread but it is still not solved I guess (since I have still Mojave, I have to guess) First it's good to have someone like Craig to respond, thank you. My idea would be, that if we have an option to turn off monitoring the Telestream drivers output, I could at least use multi output device feature of Mac OS to use an audio interface as monitor devices and the Telestream captures at the same time

강호정 Update to 9.0.7 which runs on Mojave (minimum required OS now).

  • Can you guys please fix this issue?  This is very frustrating that we still have to use version 7.2. in order to record live music

  • I apologize if I came across as snarky in the last reply...but Screenflow is my go to program for creating music performance videos and it is really clunky having to record in version 7 and then edit in 9.  I (and the rest of the music community) would greatly appreciate it if you could figure out a workable solution to this issue.

This is Apple's issue. Please read. We've developed the best possible solution given the circumstances. This issue is not limited to our products. It impacts all developers that need to capture system sound.
