VOTE - Feature Request: Add new track at specific place

I've got a stack of tracks that goes waaaay up above and waaaay down below the track I'm working with.

I've got an object a little further down the timeline I'd like to move, placing it on a new track just above the object on the track I'm working on.

I can add a new track at the top of the screen by creating an annotation or text object, drag that new track all the way down to where I'm working, and then delete the annotation or text object and move the object I'd like to move into that spot on the new timeline.

I can also scroll all the way down to the bottom of the screen, create a new track by moving my bottom track down one spot, and then drag that new track all the way up to where I'm working.

What I'd really like is to be able to click on the object I'm working on and then have the option of adding a new track either immediately above or below the selected object.  It would save me some time and a lot of frustration.

Thanks!

  • That certainly would be useful. Please fill out the form and make the request to our developers.

Others can fill out the form and vote on this to show their support.

  • Yes! I spend a lot of time trying to find where the things go when i create them.

I think that it's tied up with this one a little too: https://telestreamforum.forumbee.com/t/83hx1ap/allow-zoom-out-in-a-vertical-way-with-timeline-bars-help-with-title

  • One more vote for this feature. Current logic is a quite strange: after adding a track (any media file) in specific place, even with copy & paste you start searching where it will be located. Sometimes a new track appears as the bottom, sometims above all timelines. And you need to drag one to a specific place inside needed timeline.

  • Has this been added? I need the ability to add a new track above my current top track to add 2 b-roll cut-aways.

Right now it's a janky workaround to add media I don't need to create a new track above where I'm editing.

How did this happen? I pasted on the Timeline, but now need to stack the tracks for a new combined shot. Media is already in the timeline, but I can't just add a Track above to move the 2nd b-roll above the 1st.

Paul Solt Hasn't been added yet but the developers are certainly aware of the need. Generally, ScreenFlow needs some "traditional" editing features added track management being one of them.

    • Paul Solt I've been adding one at the bottom or wherever - and then using the handle to drag it up to the top. Will that work? I've also been trying to kinda layout the track layers at the beginning of the project / but - it's hard! with some added swipes and some words and some annotations - it can quickly become 15 layers high.

sheriffderek I’m going to just switch to Final Cut Pro anytime I need to do more edits.

I’ve filmed 1,000s of screencasts and lesson, but when I need to edit with b-roll I can’t get by with the limitations.

I’m also running into too many sync issues when working with other video apps or more complex camera setups.

    • Paul Solt Yeah. I've tried a bunch of workflows. Jumping over to a full-system doesn't really work in my case / because I update these things often as I learn more about what works for students - but if I could be confident it was done, then I'd definitely just take the footage and edit it in another program / however - I really do think that ScreenFlow has a lot of things about it - that I prefer! I end up printing some swipes and things and some other footage from AE and then using SF as the main editor.

Paul Solt It's not uncommon to use ScreenFlow for its specific advantages and then export using either ProRes or ProRes with Alpha for finishing or compositing in another NLE. There are many features that are specific to ScreenFlow that other NLEs can match. As time goes on the developers do see the importance of ScreenFlow as an editor as there are some that use ScreenFlow for editing without much or any screen recording. Hearing requests like the one in this topic is important to ScreenFlow's development.

  • I feel like ScreenFlow falls into that category - where we're probably just pushing it too far! At the core - you record your screen... at some little annotation - and we can even drop some other video and phone capture in there - and it's really amazing. I just want to say that. I'm super impressed.

I am fighting this track thing a lot though... so - how can we work this out. Are there any workflow ideas that can solve this - or a way we can frame this that get us what we want?

For example, I've been 'nesting' thing - like when I stack up 10 little bits of text - so that I don't get a 4-foot tall tracks window. But - the empty tracks never go away.

Sometimes I copy a few chunks and past them (assuming it'll paste it based on the (blanking) red cursor time-line thing's position. - but it pastes it 2 tracks below... and I just never really know what is going to happen. This also kinda connects to the static track height - which can make it impossible to see all of your layers at one time.

Sometimes it adds thing above - some times it adds things below...

So - maybe there's a way to make how it's already working - consistent + a way to remove dead tracks - or something - that doesn't try to accomplish something that is unreasonable (avid parity). Any ideas along those lines?

  • Amazing a year has passed and we’re no further along with track management. Maybe SF10, whenever it is revealed, will have track management as a new feature. One can only hope. 🤞
