Lagging or freezing picture problem using replay in Wirecast 7

Hello

We get a problem with lagging or freezing picture (as shown on the video) when we are using replay during live broadcast. The picture freezes for a very short moment (half a second or less) when we:

1. Use the replay shortcut button

2. Show the specific replay

3. The replay is over and we come back to the live picture

We use the following:

Mac OS X El capitan 10.11.6

Wirecast Pro 7.1.0 AND 7.3.1 (same problem)

Macbook Pro

CPU: 2,5 GHz intel Core i7

16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB

Black Magic Ultra Studio Mini Recorder, driver: Desktop Video 10.8.5

Camera: Canon XA25

Internet: Ethernet cable connection 100 Mb/s upload AND 100 Mb/s download

OVP: Solidtango

  • You have to stay up to date with Wirecast as updates includes fixes. Please update to Wirecast 7.5 and create a New Document and test.

I'd also strongly recommend you use Apple H.264 and not MainConcept so for greater CPU efficiency (lower CPU%) for streaming. If you use Apple ProRes to record you can lower it even further.

First we updated to Wirecast 7.5 and created a new document.

Then we changed to Apple H.264 in the encoding settings and that made the picture flicker every 10 seconds in Solidtango. Do you know why? That obviously will not work for us. We also used Apple ProRes to record but that created too large .mov files, the files are too big even though we tried different types av quality (medium, small and the smallest). Do you think our replay problem has anything to do with CPU%? Is there anything else we can try?

Apple ProRes files are large but they use much less CPU than H.264. ProRes is standard for Post Production workflow. It's what I use to edit highlight reels. You should use a fast external drive for that 7200rpm or SSD and either USB3 or Thudnerbolt.

Your upload speed should be twice your streaming encoder settings. You should also test packet loss which should always be 0%.

You may want to test a local ProRes recording only. If that looks good than it could be an internet connection issue.

  • Jonatan Bergöö  Did you work out the issue to this as I am seeing the exact problem. Even when not streaming or recording to disc,  just one camera or video clip on the time line... pressing the update replay shot button with cause the program window to drop 2-6 frames - same as shown in your video. Running WC7.7.0
    iOS 10.12.5 - iMac 4GHz i7 16GB Memory.

  • Marcus Jones can you provide a screen recording so I can see your workflow? I'd like to see your Wirecast interface in operation.

  • I have the exact same issues with my MacBook Pro, every time i hit the replay, it stutters and looks unprofessional.

  • Same problem. Replay is unusable.I've tried in 7.7 and 8. I have the latest MBP and replay has worked fine in other versions. We lose audio and as others have mentioned the video stutters.I've reset preferences , started a new document. Nothing works.

  • We have the JVC 200SP camera that has a scoreboard feature. It is a camera marketed for those who livestream sports. We run the scoreboard from an iPad. We modify the color scheme in Wirecast to match the team colors.. Unfortunately, the scoreboards are not working correctly in NewBlueFX and we can't use them as they crash Wirecast. This fall season has been a nightmare for us. Replay doesn't work, the scoreboards crash Wirecast. We have stopped using replay. I'm working backwards through WC7 to find a working replay version. I may end up back to WC6. WC6 had a perfectly working replay and scoreboard.

  • Rob Munzing Yes, Wirecast has screwed up something in the replay, its gotten so bad that we had to stop using it also. NewBlue is also crashing more than ever and i cant figure out if its from the updates or a Wirecast glitch. Hopefully an update is coming, but even in WC8 its still there, and even with a brand new, top of the line MacBook Pro.

  • Craig, I have been in touch with Caleb at New BlueFX and he acknowledged that they have a problem with a Mac build for Titler 3. He just sent me a new build to try. It seems to affect the scoreboard function. I'm sure they are on it. Thanks for the followup.

  • Rob Munzing You're welcome of course. Good to hear NewBlueFX is working on it (as we are aware of the issues and in contact with them).
