Unable to start recording Desktop

I'm running ScreenFlow Pro 9.0.2 (31509) on MacOS Catalina 10.15.3. When I start to record, I get the following dialog:

But I have it enabled in the control panel as seen here:

Any idea on how to get this to work, or debug it? Thanks in advance.

    In that window:
    Uncheck ScreenFlow 6.0.
Right-click on ScreenFlow and it should say Show in Finder.
See if that takes you to ScreenFlow 9.0.2.

  • I've got exactly the same issue. Screenflow 9.0.3 running on Catalina 10.15.3 (19D76). I've followed the advice above, but it's made no difference. Advice appreciated!

Peter Bone There's only one reason for that message. Please provide screenshots.

That can be the case with Catalina and permission to access some functions. You're welcome of course.

  • I have the same problem (downloaded trial version):

    1. Running Catalina 10.15.4

    2. Camera authorised

    3. Camera sees me:

    4. Press record and...

    5. Shutdown mac and restarted. No change.

    6. Uninstalled repeated procedure. No change.

    7. Tried iPhone as a camera - that recorded, but screen recording did not function.

It looks great software, and I hope to get this resolved. Ways forward please...

    Thanks Craig

Craig Roberts You also have to give permission for Screen recording (see further down your list not shown in your screenshot.

Catalina requires permission for virtually every function so you should go down the list and make sure ScreenFlow is enabled in every function you see it in.

  • I'm having the same problem.  After upgrading to Catalina I tested with Screenflow 6.2.  I received the above error.  I gave permission for Microphone, Camera and Screen Recording.  Same issue.  So I upgraded to Screenflow V9.0.3.  Same issue.  I've tried stopping, restarting, rebooting.  Same issue.  Please help.

As I was reading the above comments I noticed that Screenflow 6.2 is still listed in my Applications.  Should I try uninstalling that and then rebooting?

Edgar Bernier In my screenshot you'll see multiple ScreenFlow icons. My guess is that icon isn't associated with ScreenFlow 9.
    Disable that.
    Delete ScreenFlow 9.
    Reboot the computer.
    Reinstall ScreenFlow 9.

Try to record the desktop with 9.
See if it asks you to grant access.

  • CraigS  Yes, I noticed that.  When I originally installed it I had the old version still out there.  After reading this post I deleted both versions, rebooted and reinstalled the new version of Screenflow 9, indicated by the new icon, which has changed with Screenflow 9.  I still have the same problem.  Any other ideas?

Edgar Bernier Reboot the computer one more time. Sometimes it takes a reboot after it's enabled in order for desktop recording to start working. Also make sure you have no other security softtware such as virus checkers which might block access.

ALLEN Perhaps the version of ScreenFlow is not compatible with the macOS. Without any information technical information provided that's my best guess. Given the original poster didn't post back after my last instructions that may have fixed the issue.

  • Hi,

Screenflow 9.0.5 on BIgSur 11.1, new M1 MacBook Pro.

Audio, camera and screen recording are allowed under security preferences. Checked that the correct version of Screenflow is the one allowed. Tried unchecking, checking again, deleting from the list, adding it again, rebooting... Still, when I try to record the desktop, it says it is not allowed.

Angel Medinilla Please delete ScreenFlow 9.0.5 entirely and install 9.0.6.

    • CraigS 9.0.6 solved it for me, thank you guys! Interestingly enough, 9.0.5 wasn't able to find the upgrade, had to do it manually, hope this information is useful to you. Other than that, so happy to continue working with my all-time favorite capture and editing software ;)

  • Hi CraigS - I'm getting this same error running 9.0.7 on my Mac (macOS Big Sur 11.2.3). It lets me record for only time after each reboot before serving me the below error message.

I double-checked Screenflow is allowed across the board under Security & Privacy.

    Can you please assist? Thanks.

Kyle Weeks Are you in an Admin account?
      M1 or Intel Mac?
      Do you have multiple monitors?
Do you also have an older version of ScreenFlow installed?

      • No older versions installed

I took your multiple monitor tip and disconnected my secondary monitor & it looks like the problem went away! Is this a known bug?

No. Access should be for all monitors.

This might be the issue. A non-Admin account might not have access to a monitor after reboot. Please confirm you are using an Admin account or test in an Admin account

  • Ah - you mean Admin account for the computer... I thought you meant there's an admin version of a Screenflow account.

Confirming I am on the admin account on the Mac:

I've rebooted multiple times. It works the first time after reboot, but not thereafter.

    Feels like a bug.

Kyle Weeks Describe your monitors and how connected. It seems ScreenFlow is losing rights to record for one of the monitors.

No other reports quite like this yet I'm sure many have two monitor setups. That's why I'd like more details on your monitor configs. We have to have enough information to replicate the issue.
