iPad Video Changes Orientation

I have a strange issue where I export a video from my iPad and try to use it in ScreenFlow it changes the orientation from portrait to landscape.

Another thing is in the media library I don't have an option to import directly from the Photos app. I can only see Music apps.

I'm running ScreenFlow 10.0.5 on MacOS 12.4 on an M1 Macbook Pro.

Thanks

In macOS Preferences Security & Privacy please make sure ScreenFlow has Full Disk Access permissions as well as Files and Folders permissions.

Once you've confirmed or enabled that, open and close Photos. Reboot the computer. Confirm the above two permissions are still enabled. Then open ScreenFlow by creating a new blank document and check to see if you have access to Photos.

CraigS Thanks Craig, I've been through that process and I'm afraid it still doesn't show.

Alex Shore Thanks for testing that.

Hold down Shift and open ScreenFlow Help
      Select Gather Support Diagnostics
but use the Reset ScreenFlow button.
Close and open ScreenFlow and see if you access Photos (PhotoBooth may also be there).

CraigS I'm not able to provide the diagnostics on the Mac App Store version apparently?

This is a screen recording, please confirm.
It was recording in portrait mode using native iOS screen recording function in portrait mode?
It appears in portrait mode in ScreenFlow Media Library but is Landscape when added to Timelilne?
This was imported from finder or some other method (this might impact how the orientation flag is handled)?
    What version iOS?

CraigS Yes. This is a direct screen recording taken from the native iOS screen recording function in portrait mode. It appears in portrait in the media browser but is Landscape when added to the timeline.

I brought the file in directly from my desktop where it shows as portrait.

      iPadOS version is 15.5

Alex Shore Thanks for that. I've added that info to the investigation. I suspect there's an issue in how ScreenFlow is interpreting the orientation flag in the video when added to the timeline.

      CraigS Okay thanks.

Just FYI I have two other machines.

I also have the same issue on one of the other machines using ScreenFlow 9. My second machine is a Macbook from 2018 with Intel chip. It's running Mac OS 12.4 and Screenflow 9.0.7. This has the same issue, video imports in wrong orientation.

My third machine is an iMac from 2015 which is still running 10.11 (El Capitan) and Screenflow 9.0.7. That machine will show the video and export it in the correct orientation.

Previously my workaround had been to edit the video on the laptop and have to export the videos on the iMac (which also did a better job of rendering the colours without a major pink shift, I think this has been fixed in v10 of Screenflow now hopefully).

Yes that's a difference between Mac App Store version in compliance with Apple sandboxing.
I'll see if there's a Terminal script that will do that.

One issue that can occur is that ScreenFlow should ask for permission to access your Photos library the first time you attempt it and if you don't give permission there's no way to change that status in either the OS or in ScreenFlow. That would have to be done through a Terminal command.

CraigS Ah right, it's possible a popup came up but I didn't notice one. If there is a way to get it to appear then please let me know. I could try deleting the app and redownloading off the App Store I guess?

      Alex Shore

For resetting permissions, make sure the version number matches when sending, if 9 change to "9".

      1) Make sure ScreenFlow is not open.
      2) Open Terminal and copy and paste this command and press Enter:To open "Terminal" (Finder > Applications > Utilities > Terminal).

      sudo tccutil reset All net.telestream.screenflow10

You will need to enter your Mac Admin Password, this will not display, just type and hit enter.

This will not remove the instances physically, so you will want to drag the Helper into the 'Screen Recording' & 'Accessibility' permissions manually

The preferences will still be in Security & Privacy, so you will need to remove and redo.

      1. Open Apple System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy tab
      2. Click the lock to make changes.
      3. Highlight "Screen Recording"
      4. Highlight ScreenFlow (all) and use the (-) to remove (Leave this window open)
      5. Open a Finder window > Applications
      6. Right-click on ScreenFlow  >Choose "Show Package Contents" > Contents Folder > Library > Login Items (this will show "ScreenFlow Helper")
      7. Drag ScreenFlow Helper into the Security & Privacy window for 'Screen-Recording'.
      8. Restart your machine and test the functionality.

      Mac App Store Permissions Reset:

      Can I have you download the following support tool associated with this knowledge base article;

      http://telestream.force.com/kb/articles/Knowledge_Article/Gather-Support-Diagnostics-Reset-ScreenFlow-Preferences

Use the 'RESET ScreenFlow' button, then the 'Proceed' button once opened. (This will be un-eventful regarding completion)

Now open ScreenFlow and make a short test recording to see if the issue persists.

      CraigS Same issue I'm afraid.

I now know which prompt you mean though. On my other device, I downloaded the website version to fix the third-party audio plugins and the box that grants access to my photos appears on there.

I think I may get Apple to Refund me for the mac app store version and just go with the website version...

Alex Shore Regarding the iPad portrait/landscape issue can you link to your iPad video file so we can examine it on our systems?

CraigS Sure here it is, all be it a trimmed down file size version instead of the full 12mins+ length.

Same issue on my system. We're continuing to investigate. That file should help us immensely.

      Alex Shore Tested your file.
Issue is exactly as you describe in 10.0.5 and 9.0.7.
File presents correctly in timeline in 9.0.5.
      Issue confirmed.

Worth a try. Perhaps seeing it as a new install will give you access to Photos again.
