Simultaneous Desktop Presenter Connections

Hello community.
There is a task to capture 20 laptop screen in one Wirecast project. Is there a limit on the number of Desktop Presenter Connections at the same time? Has anyone had this experience?

  • This is a heavy task. Sounds to be more esports environment. In the interest of latency I would try NDI. Connect (1G) the laptops onto a netgear switch that uplinks 10G into your computer. Please remember that all the streams need to be decoded and processed. Wirecast isn't the best to offload the task to the GPU. A Xeon Gold 3rd Gen and a NVIDIA 3090 might do the job.

I would rely on other software honestly, but you can give it a try.

  • I agree with Jens on using NDI. Depending on the bandwidth you can use NDI HX which is much lower bandwidth than Full NDI although it may add to the latency.

  • thank you very much for the meaningful clarification. I need to use wirecast as a video switcher to broadcast video on the LED screen using sdi out without streaming encoding. so I asked if there is a limit on Desktop Presenter Connections. Of course, also I can try NDI. Which software would you recommend to use in this case?

  • If you brodcast on LED you would want to reduce latency to a minimum. Otherwise the real time action is noticable ahead of what the LED is showing. I talked to a newtek representative about this scenario before. The fastest you would get is NDI on a computer screen to screen. NDI itself works well with the GPU. Using the GPU HDMI is faster than any encoder in terms of latency. Wirecast as a software mixer inbetween will add the most latency.

If I were you I would test laptop (capture source) to laptop (LED screen via HDMI GPU out) via NDI. This is fastest you can expect. Then add Wirecast inbetween to see how much latency it adds. Laptop -> Wirecast -> Laptop.

I can recommend SDVoE in combination with LED screens. This is zero latency uncompressed 4k over the network. Some solutions provide PIP or screen wall setups. Might be worth taking a look into it.
