Camera Upgrade Options
I will be upgrading my camera which is about a 15 year old camcorder using HDMI output. I will be purchasing 2-3 PTZOptics cameras. I would like to know what is the best quality connection to use for them? HDMI or SDI cables. I will be running POE to each for power and to have them on LAN as I will be utilizing the PTZOptics 4D IP Joystick Controller (GEN3). I am using the latest version of Wirecast Pro.

SDI is generally more reliable than HDMI as the cables have more secure connections and can handle longer cable runs.

I like SDI having just switched from S-video. I have cheap camcorders (Canon HF m40s) and they still have HDMI output. But I am converting those to SDI via Blackmagic mini HDMI to SDI. I have a Pro Capture Quad SDI at the computer side. I really really like the SDI connections and simplicity of cable runs. The SDI has me thinking about SDI camera upgrades in the next 6 months.

Mike McColley SDI cameras are dropping in price considerably of late. The Canon XA-15 is down to about $1800 and the JVC HM180 is about $1500 for example. For PTZ cameras I've seen several that are well below $1000.
