Play the same video in 2 different shot

I know this may be not possible, but asking. I have the same video on 2 different shots (is a kind of stinger transition used as a background effect). I don't want the video to loop. If the 2 shots are subsequent the video play only in the first shot. If I use a 3rd intermediary shot without the video, it play on both the 2 shots that contains the video. Any way to achieve what I want without having to create 2 copy with different name on disk of the same video?

  • Hi Ermanno Bonifazi

What you are asking for I think is a "virtual video player" input, or lets call it a video juke box.

In my application, I have a virtual studio. I'd like to have a shot where I play a clip on the virtual TV, and then move to another shot and go full screen.

This has been requested previously, but there is no confirmation as to when or if this will be delivered as an enhancement

My workaround is to capture video on a second monitor where I play it in VLC - and use that as an input in multiple shots. Its ugly, but unfortunately Wirecast does not give us any alternatives. I understand that competing products have this capability.

    Regards.

  • Greg Kuhnert Hi Greg. I see what you mean and is cool but no this is not what I'm asking. I have 2 shots (A - B)  and part of this shot composition is a "basic mov" that I also use as stinger transition (in Wirecast) but also use here for a similar effect to a transition. This mov, mounted as layer behind the cameras, give a nice feeling when I open shot A (since is impossible to link a specific transition to a shot in Wirecast, as far as I know). The mov is set to not loop and as hold. The issue is that I linked the exact same mov on the subsequent shot B (still, as layer behind the cameras) when I bring live that shot B after shot A the video does not play. If I have and intermediate shot C between the 2 that DO NOT contain the video than A play the video -> C do not contain the video -> B play the video. Not if A -> B or B -> A

  • Greg Kuhnert I'm waiting for the VLC NDI plugin for Mac to get a very nice and simple juke box kind of features. Bad that Newtek have that VLC plugin only for Windows so far.

  • Ermanno Bonifazi Try remove instead of hold perhaps? If that fails, you can just make a copy of the file under another name, and use it in your other shot.

But Newtek has not advised that's on their radar. Besides, other competing applications have this kind of functionality. But unfortunately, not Mac. For now, we just need to persevere and hope that the powers within Telestream turn around the ship.

  • Greg, you can boot camp to get on the other side. 😉

  • Greg Kuhnert Yes, doubling the file with different name is the only workaround but is a waste of storage.

  • Jens Jarke I live in a beautiful island. Maybe you should visit.  Travel helps opening minds. I don't understand how changing an operating system would have fixed a problem that Is inside Wirecast and will stay no matter of the operating system. My discussion with Greg Kuhnert about VLC and plug in was totally about other subject. Thanks for your suggestion anyway.

Try remove instead of hold. I know that if two shots have the same source, it will continue playing.... but if you use remove, it MAY re-start the video file when you transition to the 2nd shot using the same source. I have not tested.... but it seems logically that it should work.

  • I agree. Travelling is essential and opens your mind. In down under, in Gregs neighbourhood, there is a vendor (windows based) that doesn't have the issues and provides solutions for your problems. I don't want to talk you over, just open your mind.

  • Jens Jarke Are you here to promote competitive product or to partecipate in the community? I don't think Craig should permit what you are doing. We are here to improve and share idea about Wirecast.  If you want to promote other stuff take out you marketing dollar and pay for advertising.

  • I'm a long time lover of wirecast. And with travelling I have open eyes. I'm not blindfolded. I'm here to help for sure and proved this in the past, at least I hope so. Each vendor has it's strength and weaknesses. That is natural.

And as a disclaimer I can tell ya that I don't get anything from telestream nor other competitors. Ahh, stop. I have had advantages being in the beta tester group of getting free renewal/upgrade of licenses. But the beta group doesn't exist for years anymore. Telestream went public with their betas (good move, by the way) and I pay now for my licenses, as everybody else.

    Just to be transparent.

I'm sorry if you had the feeling that I'm here to promote competitors. I'm solution oriented, trying to solve problems. Are you processing your pictures with word or photoshop. I hope you pick the best solution for what you want to achieve. That is just fair. Same applies to software encoders. Sometimes word is better, sometimes photoshop.

I'll briefly comment on this. The actual Telestream broadcast for their weekly show is of course done with Wirecast. But, they decided to not use Rendezvous, and instead to use Gnuralnet for guests. Why? Because they want a best of breed solution.

And I think Jens is trying to refer to other products, to both help you find a solution, and to make Telestream aware of the gaps that exist in their own portfolio.

  • Greg Kuhnert Greg, I have no problem discussing about best of breed or multi platform (I mentioned OBS and Zoom in other thread), we all live with multiple product and multiple solutions. Big part of my business is built on Windows, I just find out of scope in a vendor forum, responding about a simple question like mine, about the vendor product, to bootcamp into competitive solutions. That's it.  Anyway, this is the last post for me on this discussion.
