Web Based Guest Reconnecting Do Not Repopulate Shots

I'll apologize up front if this topic has been circulated recently.  The most recent post I could see on this topic was approximately 2-years ago.

My challenge is this:  We are getting ready to do an extensive, multi-shot production here Grinnell College.  We'll be in rehearsals for several weeks working out all of the technical aspects of the production.  As such, at the start of every rehearsal, our guests (student performers from across the globe) will be reconnecting to Rendezvous to rejoin our Wirecast setup.  My experience with our last show was that once folks on phones (I believe pretty much exclusively iPhones) reconnected, the shots that they were in were automatically repopulated with their video/audio feeds.  This seems to NOT be the case when guests log in via a web browser (Mac/PC, Chrome/Firefox - doesn't seem to matter).  When this happens, I have to manually go to EVERY shot that the web browser based Rendezvous feed is in and "Replace" each shot with the new Rendezvous feed.  This is doable pre-show/pre-rehearsal.  It becomes a HUGE issue if the guest/performer drops out during the show because Chrome/Firefox crashes and then reconnects to Rendezvous.

My question:  Is there a way to globally "Replace" the guest once they reconnect to Rendezvous?  I've not found a "Replace All . . ." that would allow me to choose the guest/performer name and the name of the shot layer(s) that they are on.  Is there a better way to approach this issue short of getting all of my guest/performers to use an iPhone?  ;-)

Thanks in advance to any suggestions and insight from the Telestream technical folks and from the greater hive mind.

Thanks for the quick reply!  First, I was under the impression that a Rendezvous link was only good for 24-hours.  So, if we have a rehearsal on Monday at 1:00PM and then again on Tuesday at 4:00PM, the link from Monday would no longer be active, and hence we need to start a new Rendezvous session.  In this scenario, on Tuesday with the new Rendezvous link iPhones connect and repopulate the shots that they were in on Monday, but browser based Rendezvous connections do not.

Also, if we are in the middle of a rehearsal or show and a browser based Rendezvous guest connection (like through Chrome) fails (web connection lost, Chrome crashes, user's battery dies and they have to restart the computer once it is plugged in - despite reminders), then when they restart and log back into Rendezvous, they are treated as a "new" (my words) guest and hence don't repopulate the shots they were in before the crash.  When I go to put "Celeste" back into any of the shots that she had been in just moments ago, I have to replace "Celeste" with "Celeste" because Wirecast/Rendezvous don't realize that they are the same guest.  If "Celeste" was in 15 shots, that is a lot of extra work to do while trying to keep up with making sure we are in the right shot for the performance.

      Does that help?

      THANKS!!!

       That's generally true. You described

If the browser crashes I'd assume they're reconnecting near immediately.

No Rendezvous does not currently have persistent links. That's a feature request that we are investigating.

    • Create a Rendezvous Session.
    • Send Link to Guest
    • Guest connects on Mac with Chrome
    • Assign Guest to shot.
    • Guest quits Chrome
    • Shot loses video
    • Guest starts Chrome
    • Connects to Rendezvous Session
    • The shot is immediately populated with the Guest's video again.
    • No need to reassign. This even works if the guest uses a different name than when previously connected.

I can't reproduce the issue. I'm going to need more complete steps.

    • After Guest quits Chrome
    • Disconnect from Rendezvous Session in Dashboard
    • Reconnect to Previous Rendezvous Session in Dashboard
    • Guest starts Chrome and joins Session
    • Shot is repopulated.

I can't reproduce issue this way either. The shot always successfully repopulates.

This is easy for us to duplicate.  I'll go fire up Wirecast and get a session started.  I'll engage the debugging stuff and also try and do a QuickTime screen video capture.  Hopefully I can reply in an hour or so.

      Again, thanks!

Erik Sanning Please do. I also need the steps on the guest's side.
In my case I used the same Rendezvous link for the guest since this is immediate and the shot repopulated even if the guest uses a different name when they join.

    • CraigS I'm attaching a short video shot of the Wirecast machine during the test.  It has my voice discussing what I'm doing.  I'll also bullet point what I did with the Chrome computer below.  I've also exported debugging stuff and have included it as well.

      • Start Chrome
      • Paste in RDV link
      • Add name
      • Mute mic
      • Join session
      • (successfully join) - At Wirecast added to shots
      • Quit Chrome
      • Restart Chrome
      • Paste in RDV link from above
      • Add Name
      • Mute mic
      • Join session
      • (At Wirecast - have to readmit to session and then reassign to shots)

Does this help show what is going on?

When I rejoin, even if i use a different name, there's no request to add the individual. It reconnects to everything.

You're video shows you're getting indication to join means Rendezvous believes this is a different person joining.

This might be part of the issue. As you are doing Wirecast thinks a new guest, not the same guest, is joining. So it won't be linked to the shots.

Right, so what do the guests who re-enter (after restarting Chrome) have to do in order for Wirecast to NOT think that they are a new guest?  What are we missing that you are doing that allows your guest to reconnect that we are not doing?

      Thanks!

Erik Sanning I just restart Chrome and it retains the link.
In other words, if Chrome crashes (I quit Chrome) it retains the link. Restart Chrome and the guest types in the name and it reconnects. It repopulates even if the guest types in a new name.

Keep in mind all guests are using the same link so if the guest pastes in the link again, as far as Wirecast is concerned, it's a new guest.

Guest Computer. Chrome Quits. Restart Chrome. Sign in with new name.

    • CraigS Interesting.  I'll have to look at the settings in Chrome.  When I restart my version of Chrome, and this has been the case with other guests too, it doesn't return to the Welcome page in Rendezvous.  We always have to re-enter the link.  I'll do some digging tomorrow and see what I can find.  Thanks!  Hopefully this brings us closer to a solution.

Erik Sanning There's a setting in Chrome Settings On Startup "Continue where you left off."
      See if that helps.
