Audio out of sync as recording progresses

Hey, been using screenflow for years, recently i noticed that videos are going out of sync. Im using a 2020 macbook pro, logitech camera and a yeti mic and version 9.0.7.

Once i've finished a recording the audio is fine at the start but progressively goes more and more out of sync as the video goes on. So once you get past about 15 minutes you can visibly see the voice isn't inline with the lips. Thought it might just be in SF but its the same after exporting it.

Any ideas how i can fix this or what the issue might be?

Many thanks.

  • Depending on how far the drift is, you may be able to use a slight speed change on the video source. This may happen when you have two sources that aren't locked. A video device with a slightly variable or off frame rate can cause this.

You may want to test in ScreenFlow 10.0.3 which may have much improved handling of such issues.

  • If i change the speed (not that i know how) surely it will change it for the whole video and as i say it gets worse as the video progresses, so something is making it do that?. Buying another product to test cant be the recommended solution.

RageQuitLeigh Some devices may not have locked frame rate. It's fairly common as I've seen it in other NLEs when importing certain recorded files that come from specific devices.

It's worth testing in the free trial of 10 though. You don't have to pay for the upgrade to test this.

    • CraigS I download trial of version 10 and recorded a 38 min video and by the end its way out of sync. What can i do.

    • CraigS Additionally i tested the mic through my caldigit hub and direct into the mac and the issue is present in both instances. It's not present if i use the mac's inbuilt mic. So that would suggest that the issue is something to do with screenflow and the usb mic. How can i resolve this? Thanks.

RageQuitLeigh can you attach a small project file (is it obvious after a couple of minutes) so we can examine it?
Is the audio drifting only relative to the camera (meaning the camera is drifting) or also relative to a Screen Recording (meaning audio may be drifting)?

Are both Logitech Camera and Yeti directly connected?

As i said above if i use the mac in built mic it is in sync, so presumably that suggests its the usb mic rather than the cam.

Both camera (logitech c920) and mic (blue yeti) are regular usb and the mac only has new usbc so they have to go through a hub. Ive tried the caldigit thunderbolt 4 element which is powered and also an older one that just clicks to the side of the mac.

i was able to connect the mic directly with a separate mini usb to usbc lead but that made no difference. The camera has a fixed lead so impossible to change and go direct.

No idea what 'Investigation FLOW-11311' is in reference to.

    • CraigS But its still goes out of sync if i use the built in macbook webcam + blue yeti direct to mac thru usbc. If i use the logitech webcam through the hub + the mac's in built microphone there is no sync issues. So the cam and or hub isn't the issue? It must be the microphone and how it's being applied or used by the mac/software. There must be an answer to this, as my set up must be what 90% of users have.

    • CraigS Some further testing i just did that is maybe of interest. I just recorded a video using vidyard using the logitech cam and yeti mic both having to go through the hub and the video that it created was fine with no sync issues. I don't know what that indicates, but thought it was worth mentioning.

RageQuitLeigh Go to Applications > Utilities > Audio Midi Setup and select the Yeti and look at Input and see what the input is set to. You can try changing the sample rate there and see if it makes a difference.

    • CraigS I have the choice of 48,000hz which is what it was set to or 44,100hz and both result in videos going out of sync.

RageQuitLeigh We now have a couple of reports of sync issues that seem to be specific to Blue Yeti so we are checking that mic specifically.

RageQuitLeigh So far our recordings with Yeti are in sync with our webcams.

      We're playing this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucZl6vQ_8Uo
on an iPhone and holding it up to the webcam. Tested both Facetime and c920. Devices directly attached, not through hub or dock. Test recordings 15 minutes

Please ado the same type of recording we have done:

      • Yeti pattern set to "stereo"
      • Yeti set to 48k
      • using second device playing video from YouTube (as we did for example)
      • Play video from youtube at start for 10-15s (or use the above test video)
      • Play video from youtube at end for 10-15s (or use the above test video)
      • have video showing something other than dead wall (so we can see drops if they are occurring).
      1. can we get an exported version of this test + the document?
      2. can we get a screenshot of his Audio MIDI Setup options for audio input (with Blue Yeti selected)?
