Audio playback keeps cutting out / distorting while editing

Hi!

I've recently upgraded from Screenflow 5 to 6, and since then audio playback keeps cutting out or distorting while editing videos. It's most notable right after I've cut a section from the video (with either T, or in-out points). When the playhead hits the new segment, the video playback continues, but audio playback doesn't. When I stop-start, the audio goes back to normal, only to get distorted (as if having a bad reception) after a few seconds. It's pretty annoying to edit this way.

Note: Screenflow upgraded the files I'm working with from 5 to 6 (a prompt at saving), they were recorded with Screenflow 5. I haven't detached the audio from the video files. I've noted the same behavior with source video files that weren't recorded with Screenflow, with a fresh Screenflow 6 workspace. Haven't seen the same behavior in Screenflow 5, and the original video and audio files are spotless (no distortion there).

OS X El Capitan, 10.11.4

Screenflow 6.1 (28079)

Recorded from a Logitech C920, external lav mic with the iMic hub, some video files from a Canon EOS M3.

Scratch drive is stored on main SSD disk. Free hard drive space > 100 GB. Monitor 1x 1440x900. Happy to provide a source file via private Dropbox share. Sequence running time ~ 4 minutes, audio playback issues start minutes after Screenflow launches.

MarkPWM System resources certainly can play a role. We do endeavor reasonable usability on systems that are at our base recommended compatibility.

  • Helen Jacobs did you try this, when audio starts cutting out or distorting:

    1. Option + Click the Sound/Audio icon in the Mac system bar (top of the screen next to the clock etc)
    2. Switch to a different Output Device - such as "Internal Speakers"
    3. Play sound - is it still distorted?
    4. Option + Click the Sound/Audio icon again, switch back to the original Output Device, such as "Display Audio"
    5. Play sound - is it still distorted?

Here is what I see when I Option + Click:

Switching from one Output Device to another and back again fixes the audio distortion for me. If you audio Output IS NOT "Internal Speakers" try setting it so that it is. Does the sound get better?

You should be monitoring audio through Internal Speakers or the Headphone jack. Everyone please make sure that's the case.
If you are monitoring through Display Audio please change it it to Internal Speakers or Headphone jack and test.

  • Here is an update on my investigations re continued audio problems during edits of a video.

I contacted Apple support.  they looked at my issues, and Screenflow site.  They identified that SF says no update yet to make the new version compatible with Mac OS Sierra.  There hasn't been an update issued since the release of SF6.1.  So, my options seem pretty limited....

    My options are:

wipe my computer clean, reinstall previous backup to version of El Capitan.  Then pick out what files I need since downloading Sierra to recover the rest of my files since.  This continues to be very frustrating but at least I've continued to investigate and find solutions.

I'd be ever so grateful to anyone willing to provide me with suggestions of an alternate path to resolve the impossible task of editing and playback of audio (skipping, jumping during editing process).  Anyone else experiencing this??

Helen Jacobs please respond to my last past (and Jono's) regarding how you are monitoring.
