Waveforms Only update when paused

Hello - I'm having trouble with 6.2.1 where the waveforms are really slow to draw. I've found I need to pause the video to get them to draw for me.

How do I fix this? I thought Screenflow 6 fixed the waveforms issue. Very frustrating.

Here is a video detailing it: http://wes.io/jbi8

  • CraigS I'd love to better understand your reasoning for making an entire application unusable for editing. Exactly what other functions does a quick waveform redraw slow down?

Jimmy Allison In the old forum there were many posts about waveform redraw issues.

Download that (5.0.7) and your 5 license should be recognized.

  • Boo. 5.0.7 won't open sessions made in 6. Stuck with this stunted workflow. Prayers for an update!

Chris Herrera There's been major changes between 5 and 6 as is with most major updates so there's no backwards project compatibility. You'd have to create future projects in 5.0.7 for the time being.

  • This is so disconcerting to see no improvements were made on this issue... We are using version 7.2 and are having MAJOR waveform redraw issues. So bad that it is crashing the program and even shutdown the computer. We have an iMac 27" and are doing screen captures that are 10-50 minutes long.

This is happening with every project we work on whether it is a 5 minute video where it is literally just small png images with audio AND when it is just AUDIO ALONE!

But when we do screen captures that are 15-50 minutes... it's like a war zone. What a major problem and of course, here I am years later seeing people having this issue. It makes sense seeing some of the replies earlier to comments that no changes were going to be made.

    Unbelievable.

Shannon Mocabee If this is happening with every project regardless of length then you likely have a different issue. This thread is about ScreenFlow 6 and 5. ScreenFlow 7 has had improvements in waveform redraw. Consider that this thread has had no posts  in 9 months.

I'd be happy to help you but you need to provide information. Please include the year version of your 27" iMac, RAM, free hard drive space. Also list details about any imported files (be specific) as they may actually be a factor.

All programs have been shutoff during editing to give Screenflow more than enough "room" and the videos are mostly STRAIGHT screencaptures from Screenflow. Nothing out of the ordinary that shouldn't have already been tested with Screenflow. We've tried many things to get it to work (even following some suggestions on threads from years ago that helped a tiny bit like chopping up the timeline to force mini redraws). I wish we could just allow the whole thing to render like you can do with Premiere and ALWAYS be able to see the waveform so we can keep editing and not have to wait on Screenflow. It's a time sucker. It shut off on me yesterday again even after we were babying it to death.

Shannon Mocabee Thanks for those important specs. Most other users may not be experiencing this. I've done screen recordings of over an hour without issue. Waveform redraw will pause when doing other things because it's very resource intensive. Short files will draw very quickly though in my experience. I do use other NLEs and they all have different methods to handle this because waveform redraw presents the same issues in any NLE.

You could try reseting ScreenFlow Preferences and the Cache as they can impact behavior over time.

    Delete ScreenFlow Cache:
    1) Make sure ScreenFlow is not open. (save any work in progress)
    2) Open a new Finder window.
    3) Select the "GO" menu top of screen, Hold "Option" key with menu open, and select the "Library" that appears.
    4) In the Library folder open Caches folder.
    5) Delete ALL folders that start with “net.telestream.screenflow(4/5/6)”
    6) Empty trash.

    Part 2:

    Reset ScreenFlow Preferences:
    1) Make sure ScreenFlow is not open.
    2) Open Terminal and copy and paste this command and press Enter:To open "Terminal" (Finder > Applications > Utilities > Terminal).
    defaults delete net.telestream.screenflow7

  • CraigS Ok great... thanks for letting me know these steps. We'll finish up our next couple projects and give this a go. I'll update this post when we do to let you know if there were any changes.

Jimmy Allison You may want to download the trial of 7.3 and see how it's improved.

Jimmy Allison The trial is free so you can compare and make a first hand determination based on your own workflow.

  • Jimmy Allison Hey Jimmy... no it didn't fix it at all. The thing we had to do was change our entire production process to deal with the constant crashing. So we had to streamline our screencapture to not need ANY editing at all... that was not an easy feat but we're doing it. The second thing we had to do was just create shorter videos (20-30 minutes tops) so the program wouldn't get overloaded. This seems to be working so far.

  • Shannon Mocabee thank you for responding. I was pretty much expecting that to be the case considering how this issue is not handled like an issue by Telestream. I have no need for any fluff so I'll just stick to screenflow 5. My workflow involves recording and repeating my takes on the fly and then editing with ripple delete. Most projects before editing are 5 to 20 minutes and even with that screenflow 6 was a time-consuming nightmare due to the rerendering of .wav files after every delete.

  • Jimmy Allison I totally know what you mean, and ya, if I had access to Screenflow 5 I'd revert back. I can't stand fluff... I just want the damn program to work. We have pretty simple needs... Screencapture+Ripple delete for editing (which we now try and do "one-takes" because we can't do any editing without Screenflow crashing). This has been a problem going on since Screenflow 6 and from the threads I've seen on here, the "help" has all been about what the customer must be doing wrong... so we gave up and put more pressure on ourselves and our workflow to make it work.

Shannon Mocabee If you have a license for it already ScreenFlow 5.0.7 is available at the linked page under Previous Downloads at the top.

While some might have issues with how we must handle waveform redrawing it shouldn't cause crashes unless there's corrupt preferences or corrupt cache.
